U.S. National Committee for UN Women, Metropolitan New York Chapter is an independent non-profit, 501c3 organization that solely supports the work of UN Women – the United Nations entity for gender equality and the empowerment of women. Founded in 1987, it is the first and largest chapter of the U.S. National Committee.
We are a force for social change. The Metro NY chapter connects the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut community with the critical issues that UN Women confronts globally, raising awareness and funds for programs that impact effective policies, global standards, accountability and partnerships with civil society.
We are an educator. The Metro NY chapter builds understanding of global women’s issues and UN Women campaigns through chapter events, expert discussions, curated screenings and online media.
We are an advocate. The Metro NY chapter advocates to influence international gender policy, norms and standards through the Commission on the Status of Women, and legislation and lobbying with U.S. Congress such as the International Violence Against Women Act, and the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). The USNC is nonpartisan and does not support any political party.
We are a collaborative partner. The Metro NY chapter partners with a wide variety of organizations through its program development, public education and fundraising activities, including UN agencies, civil society, major corporations, small businesses, universities and the media. These collaborations allow USNC to advance ideas and approaches to gender equality and women’s empowerment.
